"The Muppets" Review by Lucas

When I sat down to see "The Muppets" last week my heart started racing. As the lights lowered, I started to slightly panic. I was nervous in a way I never would be for just any movie. At least not any I've seen in the theater since oh, 1984? For the first time in 12 years the Muppets are returning to the big screen. And as much as I already decided to like it, I desperately didn't want to be disappointed.

Yeah, I am a Muppet fan. A huge Muppet fan. My first born is named "Henson". I have my issues. And up to a few years ago I thought I was alone. Sure, everyone 'loves Kermit.' You might hear, "I remember Muffet Babies." But where were the real, die-hard, Marvin Suggs-knowing, Dark Crystal-quoting, Time Piece-referencing Jim Henson truests?

I found them where all extreme fans can be found: Al Gore's internet.

I was not alone. I found my people. Websites like The Muppet Mindset, ToughPigs.com and podcasts like The Muppetcast- proved there were other true followers of Jim. And better yet, they were bringing together fanatics from all over the world!

Another extreme fan? Jason Segel. That's right, the naked guy from Forgetting Sarah Marshall loves the frog. But the difference between Jason and myself and other Mupp-a-holics? He's got enough star power to help resurrect what we thought may have been lost.

This may seem like a long way to intro my review, but it's actually what The Muppets is all about. Two super fans, one human and one felt, setting out to put Piggy back in her spotlight. And they're taking us on the journey!

The Muppets starts with classic home movies montage to introduce Gary (Segel) and Walter (voiced perfectly by Peter Linz). Gary is taking his long-term girlfriend on a romantic trip to Los Angeles, but surprises his muppety bro with an extra ticket to join them. Walter's one mission is to tour the now defunct Muppet Studios.

However; on their arrival, they find the classic theatre we all remember, from 1976 to 1981, is going to be destroyed by the evilest anti-Muppet since Doc Hopper held Kermit at gunpoint.

Wonderfully played by Chris Cooper, Tex Richman wants to drill for oil under the stomping grounds of such greats as Carol Burnett, Dom Deluise and Thog!

Gary, Mary and Walter find a sad Kermit and they beg him to get the gang back together and save the studio. But will it be that easy? Piggy's in Paris, Gonzo's returned to his plumbing roots and Fozzie's working in Reno with a Muppet cover band, "The Moopets!"

You know the answer. "It's time to play the music..." And that's when we start feeling the magic of classic Muppet films of yore. With blatant references to The Muppet Movie (1979) and Muppets Take Manhattan (1984), it's a nostalgia overload for those in the know, and for everyone else, it's simply hilarious.

The writers should be congratulated on gags that double up for general laughs and inside jokes simultaneously! It was awesome to hear both the oldest fan to the greenest newbs laughing at the same time! Thus keeping it current enough for today's audience while paying tribute to the Henson legacy.

As the movie rolls on, we end up back to the theatre where it all started. The gang puts on a telethon in hopes of raising 10 million dollars to save the joint. That means we get to see a brand new Muppet show for most of the last act! With covers of Cee Lo's "Forget You" and even a barber shop version of Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit" it feels current and classic at the same time.

Director James Bobin (Flight of the Conchords fame) went all out to show us the set itself in a new light. He didn't simply show off the fact they meticulously recreated the classic stage. Instead all the shots were framed so we, the audience, were in on the action. Often showing behind the desk where Kermit stood and faced us in those classic 'backstage' moments. One of several moments that gave me chills was when *SLIGHT SPOILER* the electricity goes out. We see the flicker of a match and a candle is lit by a green felt hand. The camera moves back to reveal Kermit and gang backstage right were we always found him in between acts. Same angle. Same Muppets we loved.

I might be over analyzing, (Who am I kidding? Of course I am!) but when the point of view for the audience returns to this familiar spot and all our fuzzy friends are in classic "the show must go on" mode, I almost shouted in the theater, "YES! THEY'RE BACK!"

Another shot in particular will stick with me forever. Seeing Kermit nervously backstage, open a small round door and poke his head out. At the time we don't know really where he is but as the camera cuts to the front and shows a very familiar "O" there was Kermit, introducing the show like the old days- "Yaaaaay!"

From start to finish this movie is nearly perfect. The jokes are fast and often surprising. Even in one of the saddest moments of the film they are able to work in a running gag, while keeping the somber mood. The music is great- if your a Flight of the Concords fan you'll be especially pleased. The celebrity cameos were used perfectly, never stealing the show, but there to joke and then move along.

The voices are the best they've sounded since we lost Jim in 1990. Yes, to those who have Henson's gentle Kermit or Ernie's voice tattooed into their eardrum- it is technically different. But for the first time in a long time I really heard these characters. They were themselves again. Gonzo was being Gonzo. Piggy and Kermit flirt again. Scooter...is back!

And Walter fits in just fine. I've heard Muppet fans that say, "Walter is me!" or "He represents the mega-fan in all of us!" To my surprise, I actually connected with Jason Segel's "Gary" even more. Yes. I know. Out of a cast of 150+ felt masterpieces, I chose the human.

Hear me out.

Gary's journey, though simple and fun, represents my generation of Muppet fans. The ones in their late 20s-mid 30s who have to chose whether they're going to be "a Muppet or a man" in their own right. (In other words, Jason practically played himself.)

I actually think my wife relates even more to Amy Adams' "Mary" who puts up with her man's obsession with these frogs, pigs, chickens and 'whatevers'.

In conclusion, do yourself a favor and skip the CGI and 3D for once and enjoy a movie that is entertaining on every single level. This majestic return has Kermit and crew not being "edgy" or "cynical" but taking a stand to be kind and share laughter, "the third greatest gift," to the world.

Jim Henson said it best, "My hope still is the leave the world a bit better than when I got here." The fans know he did, but this film drives it home. While his name might not be stuck over the title where the Disney logo parked itself, you will feel his spirit looking down over this movie- quite literally if you watch close.

After 27 years I can say the magic is back. We have made our rainbow connection and it is good.
